FIFA president has condemned the spate of racial abuse in football.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly condemned incidents of alleged racial abuse that took place during two German Cup fixtures over the weekend, calling them "unacceptable" in a statement issued on Monday.
The most high-profile incident occurred during Sunday’s match between Lokomotive Leipzig and Schalke, which was temporarily halted after Schalke winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei reported being racially abused by sections of the home crowd.
A stadium announcement was made condemning racist behaviour, but following the resumption of play, Antwi-Adjei was booed repeatedly by home supporters. Lokomotive Leipzig issued a public apology later that evening.
In a separate incident on the same day, a player from Kaiserslautern also reported racial abuse from a spectator during their match against RSV Eintracht.
Infantino confirmed that FIFA would continue to closely monitor these incidents and pledged to work alongside the German Football Association (DFB) in the fight against racism.
These events followed a similar case in the Premier League on Friday, when Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo alleged he was racially abused by a spectator during his side’s 4–2 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.
CBI News reports that play was briefly halted after Semenyo reported the incident to the referee.
Merseyside Police later arrested a man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
Infantino, who also addressed the Semenyo case on Sunday, said it was "absolutely unacceptable that racist abuse has occurred at football matches for the second time in recent days".
