72 suspects arrested in Bauchi State Nigeria, as part of efforts to curb sexual violence and safeguard women and children.
At least 72 suspects have been arrested by the Bauchi state Police command in connection with 44 cases of rape and indecent assaults recorded in the state within the past five months, CBI News reports.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani Aliyu, disclosed this during a press briefing.
He said the arrests were part of efforts to curb sexual violence and safeguard women and children.
He explained that the Command adopted intelligence-led policing, which has boosted its capacity to apprehend offenders.
“The fight against sexual and gender-based violence requires collaborative efforts from communities, religious leaders and civil society groups,” he said.
The Commissioner added that the cases form part of 394 incidents handled by the command during the period, which also led to the arrest of 748 suspects for crimes such as armed robbery, culpable homicide, kidnapping, theft and fraud.
CP Aliyu also urged community members to report suspected cases of abuse to relevant authorities promptly.
